Why was the ability for the sidebar to remember and auto open the last open sub-section removed?
I use it for bookmarks and bookmarks only and had no issue before.
It was a single click and there they were in list form, now I either have to add a second click to select them or leave the sidebar open permanently taking up screenspace even if only a the vertical strip with the tab for the bookmarks available.
It’s just it’s own function now – if anything this should make it easier. If you’re only using the sidebar for bookmarks, click the sidebar button, then click the bookmarks icon to open the bm side panel. Now use Ctrl + B to close the side bar (or click the show/hide sidebar icon or whatever method you use), then open it again. It should open displaying the last panel that was there.
In the example below, I have my Sidebar option set to show Never and I’m just using Ctrl + B (technically Command + B as I’m on macOS) to open and close the panel. I switch to Leo to show the same behavior using a different feature of the sidebar, then back to bookmarks:
What you described though is the new functionality that doesn’t remember the current selected sub-section unless its left open as a minimised vertical strip as pictured in my question.
Previously you could just select the sidebar button and it would auto open the last used sub-section, so now for the same functionality I either have to leave it open but minimised to a vertical strip and use a ham-fisted shortcut followed up by mouse selection to then use the shortcut again or use 2 clicks to open them to then use the same flow as before which is preferred as the mouse is needed over there for the bookmark selection anyway.
As said it’s just bad UX, really not sure why it was removed.

I’m not sure about “nothing was removed”, it use to remember the last open sub-section and now it doesn’t, I’d call that functionality removed not changed.
The reason I use the flow I do is because I have nerve damage in my left hand that affects my thumb making using the shortcut awkward due to the distance between keys. (makes me think it would be awkward for people with small hands too)
My intent has not been to put down the browser as it is my preferred browser and as such I’ll put up with the extra click but felt the need to give feedback on it with the hope it would be restored.
