Severe Rendering Latency and Stuttering with Hardware Acceleration Enabled

After roughly a year of stable performance, the Brave browser has suddenly developed severe rendering latency. Video playback on platforms like YouTube suffers from constant freezing and dropped frames, while standard DOM scrolling (e.g., NexusMods) is extremely choppy. Interacting with the UI or opening new tabs introduces heavy browser lag, dropping the effective frame rate to what feels like ~5 FPS.

Toggling “Use graphics acceleration when available” to OFF completely resolves the issue, instantly restoring normal performance. Chromium alternatives (Edge) and Firefox forks (LibreWolf) continue to function perfectly with hardware acceleration enabled on this exact same hardware configuration.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Launch Brave with “Use graphics acceleration when available” toggled ON.

  2. Navigate to a media-heavy or script-heavy webpage (e.g., YouTube, NexusMods).

  3. Attempt to playback video, scroll the page, or open a new background tab.

Actual Result: Severe visual stuttering, UI lock-ups, and massive frame rate drops across the entire browser environment.

Expected Result: Smooth hardware-accelerated rendering, responsive UI, and stable video playback.

Reproduces how often: Always (100% reproduction rate until Hardware Acceleration is disabled).

Operating System and Device:

  • OS: Windows 11 (Fully up to date)

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 11700K @ 5.1GHz

  • Motherboard: MSI MPG Z590 (BIOS up to date)

  • RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB RS DDR4 @ 3200MHz

  • GPU: MSI RTX 5070 Ti 16GB (Drivers up to date as of March 7, 2026)

  • Storage: Samsung 980 Pro SSD

  • Display Topology: Dual-monitor setup running a Dell S3422DWG (3440x1440 @ 144Hz) alongside an LG C4 OLED (3840x2160 @ 144Hz).

Which driver version specifically? I know you stated it’s up to date per the 7th, but just want to confirm you have 595.76, as that was a quick hotfix to a faulty driver which did have timeout related issues in browsers.

Just want to ensure that is the driver you’re on, not the one that needed the hotfix.

(The release notes indicate it’s multi-key DRM with HDCP 1.x monitors which isn’t what you should be running into, your monitors are newer, and regular YT videos don’t use DRM, however I used to be an Nvidia user since the GeForce 2 days, I know their release notes can be “incomplete” at times.)

GPU driver is 595.71 however I should also mention that I did narrow down what was causing the issue. Enabling ‘Background Application Max Frame Rate’ on the NVIDIA Control Panel (I set it to 20fps) is likely the culprit. Disabling it fixed the issue for me. For whatever reason it was affecting Brave. Maybe you can look into it.

Please keep in mind though this driver is faulty, Nvidia replaced it for known performance issues as well.

You need to re-download the driver and upgrade to 595.76. There’s videos on YouTube about these performance issues with the version you think is the latest which isn’t. You really should be downloading the hotfix.

The setting you adjusted basically likely is what’s broken in your driver, you should never need to adjust a browsers max framerate ever.
