Screen turns off during video playback (especially fullscreen) on non-YouTube sites after update to 1.96.59 (Android)
Summary
Since updating to Brave 1.96.59, the screen no longer stays on during video playback on some streaming sites. It turns off after my phone’s normal screen timeout, even though the video is actively playing. This is most noticeable in fullscreen mode.
YouTube is not affected. The screen stays on there. The problem only happens on other streaming sites. The same sites keep the screen on normally in Firefox and other browsers, so this appears to be specific to Brave.
Expected behavior
While a video is playing (especially in fullscreen), the screen should stay awake and not time out, as it did in earlier versions of Brave and as it does in other browsers.
Actual behavior
The video keeps playing, but the screen dims and turns off after the device’s screen timeout.
Steps to reproduce
- Set the phone’s screen timeout to a short value (e.g. 30 seconds)
- Open Brave and go to a non-YouTube streaming site
- Play a video and switch to fullscreen
- Don’t touch the screen
- After the timeout, the screen turns off
Environment
- Brave version: 1.96.59
- Device: OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite
- Android version: [15]
- Screen timeout setting: [1 min]
- Battery optimization for Brave: [Unrestricted / Optimized]
Regression
- Worked fine in: the version before 1.96.59
- Broke in: 1.96.59 (started right after the update)
Comparison with other browsers
- Firefox: screen stays on, works correctly
- Brave + YouTube: works correctly
- Brave + other streaming sites: screen turns off
Additional info
- Fullscreen vs non-fullscreen: [Both]
- Tried: [restarting browser, restarting phone, clearing cache, disabling Brave Shields for the site, disabling battery optimization, and whether it helped]
Please let me know if logs or a screen recording would help. Thanks!
