Fullscreen video playback in Brave causes the display to go to sleep mid-playback. This began immediately after updating my NVIDIA driver to 617.14. The same videos play correctly in fullscreen in Chrome, Opera, and VLC on the identical system, which points to a Brave-specific interaction with the new driver rather than a general system fault.
Steps to reproduce
- Update NVIDIA driver to 617.14
- Open Brave and navigate to YouTube
- Start any video and enter fullscreen mode
- Wait — the display sleeps/turns off while audio continues
Expected result
Video plays uninterrupted in fullscreen; the display should remain awake for the duration of playback, as it does in Chrome and Opera.
Actual result
The screen goes to sleep during fullscreen playback. Playback resumes normally once the display is reactivated, and no other browser exhibits this behaviour.
Environment
| Device | ASUS ROG GL504G (laptop) |
|---|---|
| GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 |
| OS | Windows 11 |
| Brave version | 1.96.59 (Official Build)(64-bit) |
| NVIDIA driver | 617.14 |
| Chromium | 154.0.8037.58 |
Troubleshooting already performed (none resolved the issue)
- Disabled hardware acceleration (
brave://settings/system) + relaunch - Clean-installed the NVIDIA driver using DDU in Safe Mode
- Changed VLC video output to OpenGL / DirectX
- Disabled hardware acceleration in the browser engine
- Set PCI Express Link State Power Management to Off
- Disabled Windows Fast Startup
- Set display/sleep timers to Never
- Cleared GPU-related flags: GPU rasterization, hardware-accelerated video decode, override software rendering list
Key observation
Chrome and Opera are unaffected on the same machine, same driver, same session. Only Brave triggers the display sleep, suggesting Brave’s fullscreen wake-lock request or its GPU/compositor path is not being honoured by driver 617.14.
