Locking up for about 30 seconds when I try to enter a web url in the address bar

Hey, I can solve this issue temporarily when clearing the Windows clipboard.
I followed these instructions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-help-with-the-clipboard-30375039-ce71-9fe4-5b30-21b7aab6b13f
Then, immediately after that, Brave’s address bar becomes responsive again.
@Mattches so perhaps there is something in the clipboard content that Brave has trouble processing
I’m not using Citrix, but I’m using Multiplicity, which is some kind of software KVM to control 2 computers, and also has a shared clipboard feature.
Copy/Paste from/to the local computer doesn’t create the issue. But copy/paste from the remote computer triggers the issue.
Disabling the shared clipboard in Multiplicity fixes the issue permanently

The clipboard content was what my thoughts were, too, as I indicated above. My solution for now has been the HTML page I wrote for opening new tabs/urls.

I also see this issue when a Citrix VDI desktop is running

Somehow the problem has gone away in the past 2 weeks, despite my running the same version I reported on 10/24, which is 1.71.11.4. I wonder if opening a new tab was trying to look things up on the internet despite my having disabled everything and some server/service was not available. I should have tried a packet capture. Anybody else still having this issue?

I’m still suffering from this issue every day. Any progress on this?

Use a text editor window, in which you create a URL address.

Copy that URL Address.

Paste into the Brave Browser URL address field.

@jumika if you’re still encountering this issue, I would suggest you open your own thread with as much detail about your setup and what you’ve already done to try and resolve this issue. You appear to believe that this has something to do with the “shared clipboard” — that would be a good place to start elaborating.

Additionally, knowing exactly what OS and browser version you’re using at this time will also be helpful. It would also be helpful to know if this issue occurs when you’re using a fresh version of the browser.

Or open the HTML page I put together in one tab and use it as a jumping point. Here’s the page: URL Jumping Point.

Running into the same issue here. Switched to Brave in an attempt to get rid of the problem.

The problem happens on Chrome, Brave and Chromium Edge.

Brave version:
Version 1.73.104 Chromium: 131.0.6778.204 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chrome version: Version 131.0.6778.205 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium Edge version: Version 131.0.2903.112 (Official build) (64-bit)

This problem does not happen on Firefox.

It happens more consistently when using the clipboard, but it happens from time to time for absolutely no reason.

Malware software in use: Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection in active mode, Huntress EDR in passive mode. Also using Microsoft Windows 10 Business Edition (stripped down version of Windows 10 Enterprise, but more secure than Windows 10 Pro). BitLocker is enabled.

I also use a shared clipboard, but can’t remember if I had it enabled at the time. I use shared clipboard functionality in AnyDesk and Datto RMM.

Potential hurdles that may prolong or snag proceedings:

  • autofill
  • barely-noticed network issues
  • bookmarks (autofill)
  • Brave Browser New Window
  • Brave Shields Settings
  • cache (“bad” / “stale”)
  • CAPTCHA / reCAPTCHA / hCAPTCHA
  • Cloudflare
  • cookies sources (blocked)
  • DNS cache (“bad” / “stale”)
  • extension(s) conflict
  • Google “ecosystem”
  • hardware
  • history (autofill)
  • HTTP auto-upgrade to HTTPS (enabled)
  • javascript (blocked; or Globally not blocked)
  • javascript memory leak(s)
  • malware
  • pre-fetch / prefetch
  • shared clipboard (autofill)
  • site data (some: stale?)
  • un-noticed DNS issues
  • update / upgrade bugs
  • website actions to cause pre-activity

Most of the issues you indicate should be eliminated if extra functionality such as “Show search suggestions” for the address bar were turned off. When I open a new tab via CTRL-T, I get a blank page. All suggestions are tuned off. There shouldn’t be any network activity at that point until I type something and press ENTER. But it’s precisely at that point that the browser starts to limp. The only possible cause “should” be history. But based on my own and others in this thread, the cause appears to be clipboard related and more specifically when a remote desktop is involved (Citrix was mentioned. I use X2Go for the sessions that have issue as well) I have personally never had any issues on any machine, Windows or Linux, where a remote desktop wasn’t involved.

Hi, I have the same problem, that is, the browser freezes for several seconds after opening a new tab, I can’t write anything in the address bar.

I tried to:

  • format the PC (Win11);
  • I tried all versions of Brave (stable, beta and nightly);
  • I tried disabling all options and also working on the windows task manager.

The problem persists and it’s a real shame.

Thank you

Exact same issue here - I’m happy to find a thread about it. I’ve reinstalled Brave browser numerous times, disabled Hardware acceleration.

It is interesting to see other people having this issue with Citrix - as I also am using Citrix desktop and never put 2 and 2 together, however, I will start paying more attention if it only seems to happen when I have Citrix running. Chromium 1.74.51 version on Windows 11.

I have been having the same issue for a couple of months now. I’m running Fedora 41 KDE Spin. I do not use any remote desktop app like Citrix so I feel that is not the issue. I have three monitors connected and I have noticed that when it locks up I can click on one of the other monitors to change focus and Brave starts responding again.

I’ve been having the same problem for a few months now. Like others in the thread, I too have a Citrix Workspace session running at all times. Going off of the clipboard theory, I have discovered if I copy simple text to the clipboard in the Citrix virtual machine and then launch Brave on the physical machine, the problem does not occur.

So it does seem likely that there is a connection to the type of content in the clipboard. Presumably it is rich content types that produce the problem. If you are having this problem, try replacing your clipboard content with simple text and see if the browser becomes more cooperative.

As an aside, I also experience the problem in Edge, suggesting that the problem may be with the Chromium codebase that underpins both browsers.

Thank you for everyone who reported this. I’ve filed the following issue and have re-notified our devs to take a look:

Been having this issue for a while now. Just googled and found this thread. I’m also running the latest version of Citrix Workspace. I exited out of Workspace and the locking up disappeared. Hope this helps.

I have also been having this same issue for months, was so frustrated that I was about to switch to Firefox.

I also use Citrix on this PC, so this thread was very enlightening. I can confirm that closing Citrix makes the problem go away, so that is definitely what’s causing it.

Incidentally, I don’t use that and the issue persists.

@HeathM can you please open your own thread here on Community and fill out all the information requested in the editor?
