Keyboard disappears when homepage is set to Bookmarks

I am experiencing the exact same bug reported in this closed topic: brave.appWhen the homepage is set to Bookmarks, tapping the address bar or search bar causes the keyboard to immediately disappear due to a page refresh/glitch. It makes it very difficult to search or type anything upon opening the browser. Please look into this.

Description of the issue:

When setting the mobile homepage to “Bookmarks”, tapping the address bar or search bar causes the keyboard to immediately disappear/drop due to an unintended page refresh/glitch. It makes it very difficult to search or type anything upon opening the browser.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Set the browser homepage to “Bookmarks”.

2. Close and reopen the browser (or open a new tab/homepage).

3. Tap on the address bar to type. The keyboard opens and then immediately closes.

Actual Result:

The keyboard drops immediately due to a background page refresh.

Expected Result:

The keyboard should stay open allowing the user to type.

Reproduces how often:

Every time (100% of the time).

Thank you for adding your details. That said, I do not see this issue reproduced on my end using my Samsung Galaxy S22. Did I follow the steps correctly here?

Yes, the steps you followed in the video are correct. However, please note that I am experiencing this bug specifically on the Brave Beta app (version 1.95.92) and I am running Android 16. It might be a regression or a specific glitch related to this combination of the Beta build and the OS version, which is why it doesn’t trigger on a Galaxy S22 with an older Android version. Thank you for looking into this.

When you have the cursor on the search bar, if you select the homescreen with the favorites, after a while -10 seconds_ the keyboard “falls”

Thanks for the video, Mattches! However, I noticed that in your video, the browser’s homepage is NOT set to “Bookmarks” (it looks like you are on the standard New Tab Page).

The bug triggers ONLY when you change the mobile homepage settings specifically to “Bookmarks”. When you open the browser directly into the Bookmarks screen and tap the address bar, that is when the keyboard immediately drops due to the page refreshing. Please try setting the homepage to Bookmarks on your end to reproduce it. Thank you!

I’m not sure I understand – the “homepage” is a button that opens a specific page when you tap the Homepage button. You can see that this what I’m doing in the video. If I have the mobile bookmarks page open, then close/minimize the browser then relaunch, the mobile bookmarks page will appear (as it’s the last tab I had opened) and then I can tap into the address bar without issue.

My apologies, I realize I might not have explained the issue clearly. Let me describe the exact behavior and timing, as it is related to a background refresh of the Bookmarks page itself, regardless of how it is opened.

The issue occurs ONLY when the active page is “Bookmarks” (it does not happen on the standard New Tab Page or other websites). Here is how to reproduce the bug:

1. If you tap the address bar and type something very quickly (like a short word) and press enter immediately, it works because you beat the timer.

2. However, if you start typing a longer query that takes more time (for example, typing for about 10 seconds), the Bookmarks page triggers an automatic background refresh. When this refresh happens, the keyboard immediately drops/closes while you are in the middle of typing. The text you typed stays in the bar, but the keyboard disappears.

3. Alternatively, you can reproduce it without typing anything: just tap the address bar so the cursor is blinking and the keyboard is open. If you don’t type anything and just wait for about 10 seconds, the automatic background refresh will trigger anyway, and the keyboard will drop on its own.

Brave and Brave Beta seem to have this hidden automatic refresh loop on the Bookmarks screen that forcefully closes the Android keyboard after a few seconds.

Here’s me performing what I think you’re saying should trigger the issue – am I performing these steps correctly? In the recording below I basically just:

  1. Launch Brave Beta
  2. The Mobile bookmarks page is the active tab/page I have open
  3. I tap in the address bar and wait for several seconds
  4. Nothing happens, so I start typing in the address bar then wait again

I also tested this on another device that did have bookmarks saved in the browser, just in case that was part of it, but got the same results.

Hi Mattches, I actually recorded a screen video of the bug, but the forum tells me that new users are not allowed to upload files.

Please try this on your end: just tap the address bar on the Bookmarks page so the cursor is active, and then wait for about 20 seconds without touching anything. If the keyboard doesn’t drop on its own for you after that time, then it must be a specific issue affecting only my device. Thank you for all your help and support

Are you using Brave sync?
I have sync enabled and can reproduce this. It doesn’t occur when sync is disabled.

Yes, I can confirm that! I just checked my settings and I have Brave Sync enabled, linking my Android phone with my Windows PC.

This totally makes sense now. The background synchronization loop is definitely what triggers that hidden page refresh on the Bookmarks screen, causing the keyboard to drop. Thank you mel4 for finding this correlation! Hopefully, Mattches and the dev team can look into this sync glitch now.
