Is the Brave Browser listing on RuStore official?

Hello Brave Team,

I found a listing for the Brave Browser on the Russian app store RuStore (link: www.rustore.ru). The developer is listed as ‘Brave Software’.

Could you please clarify if this is an official distribution managed by your team? I want to make sure the app version provided there is safe to use and receives official updates directly from you.

Thank you!"

@Pexpox

If Brave doesn’t link to it (“RuStore”) or document it in their site, Linux instructions, F‑Droid blog post, GitHub, or support/community articles, it is not part of the formally recognized “official” distribution set.

Presently, there is no Brave‑published documentation that recognizes RuStore as an official Brave distribution channel.

And, other than your Original Post (“OP”) above, “rustore” is not mentioned in the Brave Community pages.

“RuStore” not mentioned at GitHub > Brave:

@Pexpox to my knowledge it isn’t. When I visit that website to look, it shows as if it has only ever had one version of Brave and it never received any updates. So it has been stuck since 2024. The card that shows Brave Software also says it is from an external source.

I am going to tag @Mattches and @steeven though to make sure they are aware. If not official or is actually completely outdated, am sure they might want to refer to the appropriate staff and take action. Link to it in the store is https://www.rustore.ru/catalog/app/com.brave.browser

In fact, Restore is the Russian equivalent of Google Play, currently created by the Russian government to ensure a sovereign internet, and they simply steal apps from Google Play. They steal on a massive scale, simply copying all the apps from there without asking the developers. In principle, Russia has always been famous for piracy and theft.

Based on this description, it becomes clear that the Russian Federation has created an app store, but they are not responsible for the apps themselves. They have no idea who posts what there and do not check the documents, resulting in a very strange analogue of Google Play, a kind of Frankenstein.

Yeah, kind of weird. At least know I tagged @Mattches earlier just to make sure someone from Brave is aware. I have no idea if it’s being left as is, if Brave would want to try to submit official sources to it, or if there’s something they can do to get official notice or takedown on that.

There is so much strangeness in how things work in the world these days.

Yeah I suspect that this is not an official release. I’ve asked a couple folks internally to confirm. @Pexpox if you want to download and use the browser you’ll have to get it from our official website or our Github releases page (for desktop) an official app store.
