Additional Information: Hi, I was trying to connect my Brave wallet to Solana, and it said “insufficient funds,” which I kinda understood because I just started. So my question is, how do I pay for the gas fee when I literally have NOTHING?

Can I still get the rewards, and once I have enough, THEN pay it? Sorry, just very confused and new to this cryptocurrency stuff.

Thanks so much

@Angel4eva24 you need to fund it yourself. This means getting the SOL from wherever and sending it to that wallet address. Or you can buy it through one of the merchants to get it there. In cryptocurrency you need the native token from the blockchain in order to perform any transaction.

You need at least about $1 worth of SOL in your Wallet for Solana’s associated token account (ATA) “rent” which is used to create your BAT account. Brave has a brief article of this at https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/36396222329229-Associated-Token-Accounts-ATAs-on-Solana-Receiving-BAT-on-Solana

You may also just want to check https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/41704970565261-How-do-I-connect-Brave-Rewards-to-a-self-custody-wallet which is where Brave tries to explain the process.

You can add SOL to your wallet a few different ways:

No. You need to connect in order to be able to earn. And the “rent” for the ATA needs to be paid to establish your account. Otherwise it’s like asking if you can set up direct deposit to go to your bank but without actually having an account at the bank. The account is required first.

-Note-
I’m doing quotes around “rent” because it’s a weird term to use. This is just a one time thing and not a recurring expense. So it’s weird they decided to call it rent, but it’s how some refer to it.

Thanks so much, I will definitely read both links. Think I might need cryptocurrency for Dummies lol

Yeah, there is definitely a lot to learn and a lot to be aware of. Rewards has become an entry point for many people who want to start exploring cryptocurrency. For beginners, using something like Uphold is often easier since it feels more like a traditional bank account.

There is also the learning curve around gas fees, the various tokens required to pay those fees, and the differences between blockchain networks. These details can be confusing at first, but they are an important part of understanding how transactions actually work.

If you decide to use self custody options such as Brave Wallet or any other self custody wallet, all responsibility for security falls on you. Never share your seed or restore phrase. That phrase is your proof of ownership. Anyone who has access to it can fully control your wallet and withdraw everything. This is something that nobody from Brave or any legitimate support would need. It is meant for you and you alone.

Whenever you send funds from one account to another, always check and double check the address carefully. Some addresses are case sensitive, so accuracy is extremely important. A small mistake can result in funds being sent to the wrong destination.

Cryptocurrency transactions are generally permanent and cannot be reversed. If funds are sent to the wrong address or stolen, recovery is extremely unlikely in almost all situations.

Sorry just to add to that last bit: cryptocurrency is still a bit of the “Wild West” so to speak. It’s full of scammers and lacking regulation. It won’t be uncommon to have people trying to get you to provide things like your recovery (seed) phrase or other info. They will create fake support sites and all sorts of other things. So be incredibly careful on that.
