Description of the issue: How do I sync everything to a replacement iPhone?

How can this issue be reproduced?

Expected result: My bookmarks and passwords need to be backed up because I have to get a replacement for my iPhone X ASAP

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Mobile Device details iPhone X

Additional Information: I have to get my iPhone X replaced because the battery is shot and they won’t replace batteries for that iPhone version anymore. I have a ton of bookmarks and passwords on that phone and i’m not going to be able to have both phones with me at the same time because they are requiring me to send the old one in before I can get the replacement, which is going to be an iPhone 16.

I’ve been trying to get them to send the replacement first so that I can transfer my stuff over and then send the old one back, but they won’t let me do that and I’m expecting a call from Apple tonight to see if I’m ready to send the iPhone X in yet. But I keep having to delay because I need to figure out how to get all of my data and passwords backed up so that I can import them to the new iPhone once I’ve sent them the old one and the replacement arrives.

I had tried previously to use that QR code thing to sync the brave browser account from that phone to my other devices but every time it failed because that QR code only seems to work one way… as the sending browser, but not a receiving browser, in other words, I can’t use a browser on a different device to act as the receiving browser for a QR code from my iPhone X, or from any other device for that matter.

Of course I’m not going to be able to use the QR code anyway in this situation because I have to send in the iPhone X before I can receive the replacement iPhone 16. I need to know what to do to get all my bookmarks and passwords that have been stored on there over many years backed up, and then how to import the backup(s) to the browser on the replacement iPhone once I’ve received it.

When I try to export the bookmarks, they always seem to be exported as what looks like a gobbledygook text or HTML file with unreadable links… and I can’t figure out how to export the tons of passwords that I’ve stored in there. Apple says that the passwords should be backed up to the keychain if I have brave set as one of the 3 password managers that the iPhone allows you to select as password manager choices, but I don’t think that that iPhone X has the same kind of keychain that would do that if that’s even possible. I don’t want to just take that on faith and then lose all of my passwords because then I wouldn’t be able to get into any of my accounts.

I need help ASAP because I’m going to have to send that old one in very soon and I have to figure out how to back up all of that before I CAN send it in for the replacement.

I’m typing from a different iPhone that, when I tried to do a manual transfer from the iPhone X to it two years ago, did not transfer any of my brave browser data at all, and of course I wasn’t able to use the QR code or those password options to transfer the data from the iPhone X to this phone. And then the brave browser just basically decided that it was going to be a new account altogether on this phone. I thought I would be able to keep the old phone and just get the battery replaced, but since they don’t replace batteries for the iPhone X anymore i’m in a tight spot here. And I have no idea what to do to get that very important data backed up so that I can import it on the new phone. And I need to know how to import it to the new phone once I’ve gotten it.

The battery on that phone is so bad now that it will shut down even if it shows it’s 100% and it’s plugged in. I can only get it to work in certain situations in which I have to basically walk on very specific eggshells in order to get it to stay on. I don’t have a lot of time to get this done, but I have a lot of bookmarks and passwords that need to get backed up before I can get that horrible phone replaced. I’ve been paying for the AppleCare plus program for years and I could lose my chance to get the free replacement if I don’t send that phone into them soon.

The iOS keychain is typically included in a backup from iPhone to iCloud. The iOS keychain should be backed up from iPhone to ā€˜mothership’ computer via cable connection between those 2 devices.

Old note in the following screenshot, is now out-of-date:

Note: At this time, iOS Sync only Syncs bookmark data. We are working to include all data types in Sync as soon as possible.

Brave Sync - re iOS users - can now select:

  • Bookmarks
  • Passwords (logins)
  • Autofill data
  • History
  • Open tabs
  • Extensions, themes, apps, some settings

In your case, I would only select Bookmarks and Passwords.

I’m unable to get my computer to connect to the iPhone X. I tried this option many times using different cables, attempting to use a Bluetooth connection, trying to use the WiFi connection, as well as trying to access the iPhone X on the computer through both the iTunes app (which keeps giving me an error message saying that it was unable to connect to the device despite appearing at first to be connecting to it… including showing a message on the computer & the iPhone X asking me to confirm each device as a trusted device, which I did. But then I assume it must’ve failed to complete the connection and every time I tried afterwards it would show the device name but didn’t do the accept-as-a-trusted-device message, yet did show the device name, but gave me an error message saying it couldn’t recognize the device), as well as through the connected device folder on the computer (which just showed an empty folder under the iPhone device folder on the computer). I tried using my newer iPhone and it seemed to work fine but I still wasn’t able to locate anything specific aside from the main Apple app data such as podcasts, music, gallery, etc. I tried again with the iPhone X and kept getting the error message again over and over.

I don’t quite understand the sync chain option. It appears to indicate on the page you linked to that if I remove a device from the sync chain, which I will have to do with the iPhone X (because I have to return it to Apple before I can get the replacement… I have different bookmarks but only 1 password on the iPhone I’m using right now because I never could figure out how to transfer them with the sync chain thing when I got this phone) then I’ll lose from the sync chain all of those passwords and bookmarks I’ve saved to the app from all the years since I’ve had it on the iPhone X I have to return… if I can figure out how to even do it because I can’t quite understand some of the content that was used in the explanation of how to do it.

(since I can’t get the battery replaced on that iPhone X, I have to send it back before Apple will send me the replacement, which will be an iPhone 16)

I’m afraid that when the iPhone X, the main source of all my passwords and original bookmarks, is removed from the sync chain, should I figure it out, and do so correctly, it will cause all the data synced from that iPhone X to be removed from the sync chain. Because that’s kinda how the sync chain instructions seem to imply, at least to my understanding.

AND I’m completely unclear how I am supposed to go about adding the new iPhone to the sync chain if the origin device, (should that be possible for it to be the origin device or whatever device it’s considered to be in a sync chain), for that sync chain to remain intact, receive the passwords/bookmarks from the iPhone X they originated from… which will have to be removed from the sync chain before I can mail it back to Apple… (and then wait for Apple to receive it before they will send out the replacement in the mail), AND not lose the passwords and bookmarks from the returned phone I’ll have removed from the sync chain. It says that anything from a device removed from a sync chain will not be available anymore so this worries me since I have no way to have access to both the old phone and the replacement phone at the same time or place, and it will likely take awhile from the time I mail the old one back until they receive and process my case and then mail me the replacement.

Btw, both of my iPhones are using the same Apple account, and the new one will as well. I’m unsure if this is an important factor or not but I figure that I should mention it just in case it may be of significance.

@ScriptedChaos that’s quite a lot of text. If I understand correctly, you just want to get your data from one phone to another and you are trying to do that by Syncing your current phone’s data with your PC, so that you can then re-sync it to your new phone when it comes in, is that correct?

@289wk shared the correct documentation with you. Let me narrow it down and walk you through the process. All you need is your old phone with your data on it and the PC you want to Sync to:

  1. First, if you have started any Sync chains on either of those devices, go ahead and delete them now so I can ensure we’re starting off fresh.
  2. Now, on your phone, launch Brave and go to Settings --> Sync
  3. When you are prompted to, tap Add a computer – you should see a ā€œcode phraseā€ appear on the screen.
  4. On your PC, launch Brave and go to Settings --> Sync and click Start using Sync
  5. Then when prompted, select the I have a Sync code option:
  6. Now enter the Sync code that is displayed on your iOS device into the text box showing on your PC – make sure you enter it exactly.
  7. Click Confirm

As long as you copied the code correctly, you now have your iPhone and your PC on the same Sync chain. On the Sync page, of your PC and iPhone, toggle on/off whatever data you want to Sync, then confirm on your PC that the iOS data has been successfully synced. Once it has, you can simply leave the Sync chain (do not delete the Sync account, just select Leave Sync chain) on your iOS device. Now there’s only one device on the Sync chain – the PC you added above.

When you receive your new phone, launch Brave on your PC, go to Settings --> Sync --> Managed Synced devices click Add new device and follow the steps to add your new iOS device to the Sync chain. This will Sync your data and you should be all good to go.

Just an aside. AliExpress sells batteries for iPhoneX I replaced one for my friend recently.

Also the new battery is working great!!

If you are looking for a new phone great… but if the X is doing what you need and getting security updates then a new battery is a good option!
