Fixed in Brave 1.97.56 | Bookmark manager is opening top-level folder instead of selected folder

Description of the issue:

Brave now opens top-level folder in Bookmark Manager when using left-click context menu instead of the selected folder.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Left-click on a Bookmark Bar folder
  2. Go down hierarchy to desired folder
  3. Right-click on the desired folder
  4. Select “Open bookmark manager” and left-click it

Expected result:

Bookmark manager opens in the selected folder

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Brave 1.96.59 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Chromium: 154.0.8037.58

Similiar issue. Brave would display top level in Bookmark Manager instead of showing collapsed hierarchy like before this update

Brave 1.96.59 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Chromium: 154.0.8037.58

edit. @Mattches i should learn to disable brave autoupdate after they fix this unstable. years ago i am told Brave disable it, recently youtube comment tell me there is default way to disable autoupdate.

Same here. Have had this issue since the most recent update: Release Notes v1.96.59 (Sep 24, 2026)

Yea this looks like an upstream change (or issue) – let me see if I can find any more info on this and if we plan to change it.

I’m on Brave 1.96.61 (Official Build) (64-bit) / Chromium: 154.0.8037.98, and the bug persists.

I believe it has to do with the implementation of new IDs for identifying bookmark folders. Previously, folder identification used a simple decimal number—such as brave://bookmarks/?id=17264—but since version 1.96.59, it has switched to using 128-bit UUID-style links, like brave://bookmarks/?id=0992aa16-079b-42f4-90ae-a612eaff98cd. However, when opening the bookmark manager for a specific subfolder, Brave attempts to look up the old ID; and failing to find it, it defaults back to the top-level folder.

does that mean if there’s a way to clear the old lookup id from memory then brave will use the new id?
