Fingerprint protection prevents EBOX speed test

Description of the issue: When accessing the website to test my internet connection, I get hit with “Connection to server could not be established. You can try again in a few seconds.”

Exact URL of the website in question: https://nperf.ebox.ca/

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (yes/no) Yes.

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off? Yes.

Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no): Yes, if you disable “Block fingerprinting”, I no longer get that error.

Does the site work as expected when using Chrome? Yes.

Brave version (check About Brave): Brave 1.94.121

At this time, re Brave Browser Site-Specific setting “Block fingerprinting” ← Disabling that, apparently / effectively / helps to Allow WebGL info (and other info) that some websites require.

A fingerprint can be assembled from things such as:

  • graphics/GPU characteristics;
  • WebGL/WebGPU information;
  • Canvas rendering;
  • audio processing;
  • installed fonts;
  • browser language;
  • screen/device characteristics;
  • certain media-device information;
  • WebRTC-related information;
  • various other browser APIs.

Update: I found that the issue specifically occurs when Canvas protection is enabled. With “Block fingerprinting” enabled but Canvas disabled, the EBOX speed test works normally.

@Mattches

I am a bit stumped with the Canvas disabled setting found by the OP:

‘Fingerprint protection prevents EBOX speed test - #4 by Flame’

I used to have that control switch as mentioned at:

‘Bring back fingerprint blocking level selection on Android - #7 by 289wk’

but no more? (Brave Browser version 1.94.121 (on MacOS 14.8.7 Sonoma))

Clarification: I had to use Brave Nightly to access the additional fingerprinting settings and narrow the issue down.

I was surprised that the control switch disappeared on the stable version.

Brave update, moments ago - now includes the granular Fingerprinting controls:

Brave 1.95.101 (Official Build) (x86_64)
Chromium: 153.0.8010.37

Example, from Brave Support page:

Brave 1.96.61 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium: 154.0.8037.98

The issue still exists.
