When I return to Brave Browser, all of my extensions break (more than 10 of them). They are NOT being disabled by the browser itself. I have to go in an toggle each extension on and off to make them work again. So the issue is NOT specific to one extension.
All of the extensions break at the same time. They look like they are working in the toolbar but as soon as a click on one, for example, proton pass, it becomes obvious they are broken because I get errors in the dropdown that appears. I should not have to manually toggle every extension each time I come back to my computer. I have ~15 extensions so uninstalling them is impractical. I can try disabling them one by one but that is time consuming. Since all of the extensions break together, that leads me to suspect something at the browser level (ie a brave bug) that is causing it. I used all of my extensions on google chrome for years (they were all installed from the chrome webstore) with no issues. I am trying to make the move to brave but this issues with the extensions is going to be a “hard pass” unless it gets resolved
So It turns out that manifest 3 extensions naturally turn off their service workers after a few minutes of inactivity. That seems to be the same across all chromium browsers.
In the other chromium browsers I have tried, they seem to have a more natural “wake up of extensions so I don’t have the extension issue on Chrome/Kiwi/Helium, all chromium forks.
The only way I found to get an extension to turn back on was manually toggle it on and off in the extension menu.
so something specific about the way brave is functioning in preventing the service workers from turning back on after going inactive
@WardenSlayer out of curiosity, do you have Continue running background apps when Brave is closed enabled in your settings? That’s at brave://settings/system.
It’s a bit hit and miss, usually relying more on the code by the extension devs. But it’s worth just double checking in case it might help.
I am using the exact same extensions in Brave as I used in Chrome (before trying to swap to brave) and in both Helium/Kiwi (both chromium ports) testing how they handle the same situation. The issue is ONLY on Brave because all 3 of the others never require me to manually toggle the extension to get it to work, even one first launch and after waking the browser up after being idle. It is not even a “shields problem” because I try to interact with the extensions pinned in the header and they all show errors or just never load. It is not tied to any one page. It is at the browser level.
How has ANYBODy else not had this same exact problem? I have see other reports of similar issues but nobody answered their questions and the threads are just locked now.
No clue. I know haven’t had any particular problems myself, but I also don’t put my computer to sleep. It’s just on or off. No screen saver, no sleeping, etc.
I beg to differ. Last night I tried looking for similar and the ones I saw were areas where the people who posted never replied back with information requested. If it goes 30 day or more with nobody following up, then topics automatically get closed.
And just in case you say it shouldn’t, they get closed because updates would have been done and changes could happen. Leaving them open tends to invite off topic comments, introduces confusion, and clutters the forum.
@Mattches Any ideas on this? The idea of extensions “breaking” and needing to be manually activated again if you let Brave idle?
I see mention of it being how Chromium handles MV3 service workers, but then they mention it’s not being handled gracefully by Brave as it is on the others.
@WardenSlayer I only see one similar post made recently. This is certainly not a “common” issue. Further, if this were a wide spread bug pushed with the latest update (1.86.142), we’d expect to see a lot more reports coming in.
Testing on my end, on both Win 11 and macOS systems, I’m not seeing any issues with extensions.
Can you confirm that this is occurring on a personal machine and/or home network as opposed to a work machine/company network? Additionally, if you launch Brave and go to brave://policy do you see any policies listed on this page?
Lastly, can you try un/reinstalling just one of your extensions and test to see if that extension still has the same issue after you reinstall?
I am not on a work network that might have policy is place (on home PC). I did check anyways but found none active.
I am not talking about putting to sleep my computer, I am just talking about fixing all the extensions maually, using them fine for a time period, stepping away from the browser, and when I come back I have to toggle every extenson again becacue they all stopped working. I am trying to click on them in the pinned extension area but all of the drop downs that open never populate (blank) or load endlessly
Ah, figured you were talking about putting to sleep or like a screen saver situation. Even if not that, let me ask if it might be on an aggressive SSD power-save mode? In that situation I could see the path to the extensions kind of hitting a wall and blanking out.
Then trying to think outside the box, do you have graphics acceleration enabled? If you do the opposite of your current setting, do you see any change?
