Double characters in URL/Address bar

Description of the issue:
I have been successfully using the Brave browser on Kubuntu Linux for many years. Recently I updated my Kubuntu to version 25.04 Plucky Puffin and thats when this issue began. If it matters on Kubuntu I am using Wayland and not X11. The current Brave version I have installed is 1.78.102. The issue is if I type something into the URL/Address bar the characters I type are doubled. For example if I type “homedepot” it shows in the URL/Address bar as “hhoommeeddeeppoott”. However, if I prefix the characters I want to enter with a single colon, that is a “:”, then the characters after the colon are no longer doubled but the colon itself is still doubled. That is I can type “::homedepot” into the URL/Address bar just fine. This issue started when I updated to Kubuntu 25.04 from 24.10 and was with a slighty older version of the Brave browser. Since then I have updated the Brave browser version at least 2 or 3 times and the issue persists. I have tried “Reset settings” inside Brave and the issue persists.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

Expected result:

Reproduces how often:
Always. Very consistent.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Linux, Kubuntu 25.04 Brave 1.78.102

Additional Information:

I exported my bookmarks and used “apt purge brave-browser” as root to completely remove Brave. Then I ran “apt install brave-browser” to newly install it. Still the same issue. Next I renamed the directory of $HOME/.config/BraveSoftware to BraveSoftware.OLD. I started Brave and imported the bookmarks I had saved. Now the issue is gone. Some setting in $HOME/.config/BraveSoftware caused the issue, I don’t know what exactly. For whoever may be monitoring this issue I consider it resolved and it may be closed. Thanks.

Thank you for reporting this and for the follow up. I’m glad to hear you were able to get everything sorted out. I will forward your report to our Linux team for review as well.
