Do not *ever* place an update popup, or any other popup on my page

I was in the middle of a typing test that detects AFK and will fail you for it. This popup made me furious enough to create an account here. Do not do this.

Brave version:

Brave 1.92.134 (Official Build) (arm64)

Chromium: 150.0.7871.63

OS:

macOS Tahoe 26.1

Thank you. Correct, yes. It popped up when I was obviously busy, otherwise it would not have been such a problem.

Please edit your Original Post (“OP”) above, in order to include:

  • Brave Browser version numbers
  • Operating System version
  • Computing device info

And, just guessing from what you wrote … possibly you are referring to a typing test that is an online test that measures how quickly and accurately someone can type.

Typically, you are shown text such as:

“The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog…”

and you have to type the displayed text as accurately and quickly as possible. The site measures things such as:

  • Typing speed — usually expressed in words per minute (WPM)

  • Accuracy — percentage of characters/words typed correctly

  • Errors — mistyped characters or words

  • Time — how long you take to complete the test

Guessing, here that your “detects AFK” = Away From Keyboard ← The website that you were visiting, jumped on / sensitive to: the occurrence of the Brave Browser Update alert/pop-up.

cc: @Mattches … Why would a Brave Browser Update alert/pop-up (“BBU”) occur when the user was obviously busy? Suppose the user was signed-on at a bank website, and the BBU alert barged in? That would also be a case of bad timing.

@sigma_genera what “pop-up” are you referring to here? The browser doesn’t have one that would behave this way. It shows the Update icon on the top-right, overlaying the main menu button:

And this doesn’t actually do anything until you interact with it.

Man, I wouldn’t have gone out of my way to make the post about the pop-up if it didn’t happen. That update in the upper right corner is not at all what I am talking about. The pop-up hijacked my cursor while I was using it.

I’m not saying it didn’t happen – I’m asking what you’re referring to, because that’s not how the browser updates. Can you try searching to find a screenshot of this type of pop-up?

I had to scramble to dismiss it right right away as it risked me failing my test. I truly hope it never happens again but if it does, I will screenshot it.
