Desktop Facebook website uses too much CPU

Description of the issue:
Opening messenger turns my CPU utilization up too much (compared to any other browser)

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Facebook on desktop
  2. Open messenger and talk to a friend

Expected result:
Cpu utilization stays low, comparable to other browsers.

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Additional Information:

Brave just turned my PC into a stove for no reason so I decided to upload an image of my task manager.

The one with the arrow is a facebook tab that has a single messenger window open.
The other is youtube.
My PC specs are RTX 4070, M.2 Gen 4 SSD and Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
I know nobody uses facebook anymore but I still do sadly. Is there any way to fix this?

I tried enabling and disabling HW acceleration, i tried many things. Any other browser behaves correctly and the issue only happens if I open a messenger window on the facebook page.

Further investigation led me to conclude that what’s actually happening is as follows:

The moment I send a message in a facebook chat, that brave tab starts writing to my disk with 60 MB/s constantly until I close the tab. This can be seen in the screenshot above.

What you are describing is not a Brave-specific bug. It interestingly appears to be a common issue with those using Facebook across different browsers in general. One user reported that clearing the cookies and cache resolved the problem. Have you tried this?

"I just wanted to weigh in with a “me too”: I am consistently observing Facebook Messenger polling at 100% CPU usage in the Chrome Task Manager. This bug is NOT fixed at present date. "

"Update: Tried to log out of my facebook account and noticed the CPU went back to normal. I tried to log back in again and the CPU went up again.

Clearing the website’s cookies and cache resolved the problem."

Thank you for the reply! Clearing site data and cache fixed the issue. That’s crazy.
