Cmd-W closes all tabs bug has returned

The bug I reported here went away for a while, but is back again.

Version 1.74.51 Chromium: 132.0.6834.160 (Official Build) (arm64)

@luhmann,
Can you please tell me what macOS version you’re using at this time? I cannot reproduce this on my end. CMD + W closes the current tab as intended.

Additionally can you please confirm that this issue occurs in a fresh browser profile by going to Menu --> More tools --> Add profile, closing your original profile (so only the new one is open) and try to reproduce the issue there?

I’m using MacOS 15.3
I already tested on a clean profile, since that was asked in the previous thread. (UPDATE: I had previously not closed the other profile when testing, but I did just now - problem still persists.)

Yeah I’m testing on the same version of macOS and am not having this issue. Could potentially be an extension you have installed if you have any — but then the new profile probably wouldn’t have reproduced the issue.

When you hit Cmd + W and it closes all the tabs, does it also quit the process? That is, do you still see the little “dot” on the Brave icon in the dock?

I deleted the app, downloaded it again, and reinstalled it. Problem seems to have gone away.

I’m wondering if the problem is caused by the update process in some way?

Potentially but I can’t be certain. I will leave this thread open for now in case the issue occurs again. If it does please let me know.

It happened again. In this case, however, it seems that it was due to an incomplete update. Last time I had checked, and I was running the latest version, but this time after I restarted the browser it still showed me running an older version, and there was a spinning wheel saying it was updating, but nothing happened. As in the past, manually updating fixed the issue.

And it happened again with the latest update.

Basically, I can’t update by using the built-in updater, I have to download and update manually each time.

Really weird that cmd-W is the only thing that breaks though? And that the same thing breaks each time?

And again…

same issue as before.

I’m here to report the same issue described by luhmann.

Using Brave (updated) on macOS 15.5
Brave version: 1.80.115 (Official Build) (arm64) Chromium: 138.0.7204.97

What happens:

  • Command W closes the entire window, not just the active tab.
  • If there are other Brave windows open, they remain unaffected.
  • This is not the same behavior as Command Q, that would close all Brave windows (and the app).

Details I noticed:

  • In the File menu, the “Close Tab” option no longer exists.
  • In the File menu, Command W is assigned to the “Close Window” action.
  • In Brave Settings / System / Shortcuts (note that I’m referring to Brave’s own settings, not macOS settings), there is still a “Close Tab” item with Command W as its shortcut, but it doesn’t work closing tabs, but closing the entire window.
  • It’s not possible to add a shortcut for “Close Tab” in macOS Settings because “Close Tab” is no longer a Brave menu item.
  • If I close Brave (Command Q), sometimes “Close Tab” comes back to the File menu.

What I did to (sort of) solve this:

  • In macOS Settings, I changed the shortcut for “Close Window” to Command Shift W, so Command W is now unassigned in Brave.
  • In Brave Settings / System / Shortcuts, I assigned a new shortcut for “Close Tab”; I chose Command E because is close to Command W.
  • Now Command W does nothing, and Command E closes the current tab.

This is far from ideal, and I hope Brave fixes this bug and brings back “Close Tab” to the File menu, with the traditional Command W shortcut.
