Closing all tabs almost daily

Running android 17 on my pixel 7.

Battery optimization is disabled, brave is set to continue where I left off and not close tabs on exit.

Recently (3-5 days ago) I opened brave and all my tabs are gone.

Weird.

I have no option to restore a recently closed window like on desktop, so I go through the tedious recovery tab by tab from history.

I cleared the cache, I checked that it is running the latest version.

This repeated 3 times since.

Extremely annoying, especially with the toil of the manual recovery of the 30-ish tabs…

Does anyone else have similar issue recently?

Any workarounds or settings I should try?

Thanks!

First, test if it always closes all the tabs on exit:

  1. Open a link, e.q. brave://version
  2. Open Recent apps / Tasks switcher, swipe Brave card away to close the browser.
  3. Open Brave again and see if the opened tab disappears.

These are the Brave settings which can clear all tabs but not history:

  • Settings > Brave Shields & privacy > Shred > App close;
You should change this to Never.
  • Settings > Brave Shields & privacy > Close tabs on exit;
    You should disable this.

Do the test again and see if it works.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

Done, btw the version is: 1.91.180 Chromium: 149.0.7827.201 (Official Build) (64-bit)

It reloaded the tabs after restart. I also went to the app in settings and repeated by force stopping it. The same result all tabs came back.

Both settings you recommended were already as you proposed.

The issue however just happened to me a few minutes ago.

I have no idea what triggers it.

I got some messages on messenger with links I opened in brave.

I listened some YouTube videos.

From one minute to the other, after some app switching on the phone, I found that I only have an empty tab, so I had to open new ones 1 by 1 and load them back from history…

Perhaps it’s really a bug in this version. You can ask @Mattches to help you file a bug report.

For now, use tab group as a workaround:

  1. Open all the tabs you need.

  2. Open Tab switcher > 3-dot > Select tabs > 3-dot > Select all > Add tabs to new group > Type the group name > Done.

  3. Now, even if it deletes your tabs, they are still saved in Tab groups menu and can be opened in one tap.

And wait for the new Brave update.

Thanks, I did as recommended. Much appreciated!

Thanks, mel4 already recommended these, and it kept happening despite of these.

I ended up using the tab group workaround that he also recommended, and that seems to work.

@dlenkes to confirm, the steps to reproduce this issue would be to open tabs, leave Brave open and user other apps on your device, then return to Brave? Or is there more to it than that?

I have about 20 tabs in brave a couple tabs with youtube, which I usually use to listen podcasts in the background.

Yes, switching apps, like fb or messenger, occasionally opening links from the later in brave and stepping back.

Locking unlocking the phone, etc.

I can’t recall anything else.

You can update to v1.92.136 from Google Play store now.

@dlenkes definitely update to the latest build as @mel4 suggested to see if the issue persists. I know this seems like a silly question but can you confirm you’re not opening these sites as Private tabs?

Although even then, Private tabs should be preserved unless they’re set not to be.

I can confirm that I am running on the latest build.

No, I don’t run private tabs.

I ungrouped my tabs, so I will keep you posted if the issue still persist or not.

I am happy to report that the issue has not reappeared since the update. Thanks for the help.
