I just received an email from Unstoppable regarding the partnership with Brave and the .brave web3 domain. I understand the intention was to apply for ICANN registration and get .brave accessible outside the browser. The email said that .brave TLD was not proceeding with the ICANN application because
“the brand partner behind the TLD decided not to move forward with an ICANN application and instead chose to focus on Web3 only.”
Can anyone at Brave offer any insight into this decision? I was really looking forward to .brave being registered with ICANN. Thanks!
We decided not to move forward with the ICANN application for .brave for now.
It will remain as a Web3TLD for now and keeps things simpler as we build towards features that make them more useful as a universal handle, with less of the ICANN bureaucracy and requirements that come with it.
As we implement the BAT v4 Roadmap, there will be opportunities to incorporate the .brave domains into BravePay, Wallet, and the agent economy.
We think it’s a much more compelling use of a TLD, rather than just replicating what ICANN already does. More updates to come as this develops!
Hi Evan, when you say for now, does that mean there is a plan for the future to apply with ICANN? Or because Brave has decided to focus instead on BAT Roadmap that ICANN is now no longer the future. I purchased a few of these domains with the hope that it would be accessible from the wider web. Honestly, I am not too interested in anything in that BAT Roadmap but I appreciate the link. It was an interesting read. Thanks for the response!
