Brave Browser uses Google Safe Browsing to protect users from phishing, malware, and dangerous downloads by comparing visited URLs against a database of known threats. To preserve privacy, Brave employs a privacy-preserving implementation where the vast majority of checks occur locally on the device using hashed URL prefixes, meaning full website addresses are never sent to Google.
On desktop, Brave routes the remaining verification requests through a Brave-operated proxy server, ensuring that Google never sees the user’s IP address. On Android and iOS, Safe Browsing relies on operating system services (SafetyNet or WKWebView); consequently, these mobile requests are made directly to the provider (Google or Tencent), which may expose the user’s IP address. Users can disable this feature entirely in the browser settings, though it is enabled by default for security.
