Brave often crashes PC

Brave started crashing my whole PC. It has happened before maybe a few times, but in the last 2 weeks I noticed it ramped up the crashings 10x.

It happens randomly so it’s hard to reproduce consistently but it has something to do with playing youtube videos or opening new tabs/links.

It will only happen when I open a new tab or press a link that opens a new page. Once it happened when I clicked an extension button, which i guess was also trying to open a new page.

It was happening maybe at least once every hour at its peak, but after trying out EVERY setting and suggestion found online it is down to maybe once a day. Which is still too much for a browser to bring down the whole PC. I can deal with brave crashing itself (which also happens occasionally, during video playback usually), I cant deal with brave crashing the whole PC.

I hate to switch to another browser because I really like Brave.

Can you please go to brave://crashes, make sure any crash reports that appear here are submitted, then share the crash report IDs with me here?

Sure thing, take your pick. There is a lot to choose from:

Currently I will be running youtube exclusively on another browser (opera) with everything else still on brave.
I will update if that will reduce crashes.

I believe I found the culprit.

Overclocking DDR5 RAM to 6000 MHz is causing Brave to act wonky on my pc.
I’ve set it back down to 4800 MHz and the crashes stopped at least for a few days now.

But the weird part is I had my ram sticks overclocked to 6000 MHz for months now - didn’t experience any other app/game/program crashing the pc.

I only started getting excessive crashes in Brave specifically.

Hey, that makes total sense! Overclocked RAM can get finicky, even if it seems fine for a bit or only messes with certain apps. Browsers like Brave are super picky about memory since they handle RAM differently than games or other programs. It’s possible 6000 MHz was just barely stable and started acting up due to heat, system updates, or wear over time. I’d suggest running MemTest86 to check for any hidden issues. If you wanna go back to 6000 MHz, tweaking the voltage or checking your RAM’s XMP profile and BIOS updates might help keep things stable. For now, dropping to 4800 MHz seems to have done the trick, but keep an eye out for any weirdness.
