**Description of the issue:**
Brave will not update itself. When I visit the ‘About Brave’ page I see this error code: " An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 1: [0X80004005](https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025390311-How-do-I-download-and-install-Brave-0X80004005))."

This issue has persisted for around 6-9 months now. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled the app multiple times. I have deleted the user data in the AppData folder multiple times as well. Nothing seems to fix the issue.

I would like to keep using Brave, so any help fixing this issue is appreciated.

**Operating System and Brave Version(See the `About Brave` page in the main menu):**
Windows 11 Pro - Version 24H2 - Build 26100.3775
Brave Desktop - Version 1.77.97 Chromium: 135.0.7049.84 (Official Build) (64-bit)

@Mcronald

For the **system level** installation of Brave Browser, the `brave.exe` file will be at:

> 64 architecture
> `"C:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe"`

> x86 architecture
> `"C:\Program Files(x86)\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe"`

For the **user level** installation of Brave Browser (you DO NOT have administrative privileges, during installation), the `brave.exe` file will be at:

> `"C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe"`

* * *

Investigate: Do you have 2 separate installations of Brave Browser?

There is no binary in “C:\Users[UserName]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe”. I do have administrative privileges and the binary is located at “P:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe”. It does appear that the updater binary is on my C drive though at “C:\Program Files (x86)\BraveSoftware\Update”.

After removing all files again and reinstalling, still no effect and I get the same error.
