Description of the issue: When I attempt to start the Brave Browser, I get prompted by UAC if I want to allow this app to make changes- I click Yes and then nothing… If I right click on shortcut and select “run as administrator” same results. How can this issue be reproduced?
Every time I start/launch Brave
Nothing happens, but I see a new .tmp file
Expected result:
Brave Version( check About Brave):
Unable to check because the browser never launches
Uninstalled and then reinstalled- BraveBrowserSetup-BRV030
Uninstalled and then reinstalled- BraveBrowserSetup-BRV011
Additional Information:
I’m running Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26100 Build 26100
I did some google searches and found others with similar issue and attempted to resolve based on what they did to resolve, however nothing has worked.
If I delete the “Local State” file, I do not see a new one being created. I also see the UAC on my brave shortcut on my desktop for some reason. I have installed the “BetaBrave” and “Nightly” versions and they run fine. I also created a new user account and logged in to it and ran Brave just fine. So something in my profile is messing with Brave.
Brave was working yesterday morning through early afternoon just fine. I had 1 instance with multiple tabs opened and then another instance with just 1 tab. I closed both, put my system in sleep mode. Then when I return and launched Brave that is when this issue started.
I now have 17 crash files located in-
C:\Users\James Keddington\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data
@jkeddington I see you link to a lot of old stuff from 2023 and2024. But maybe consider the more recent? Not sure if it’s related, but assuming instructions as shared or linked to in the below might be a good thing to check:
@jkeddington yeah, long story short they had a Chromium change that kind of reworked how admin privileges work. Launching as admin now kind of breaks things. Before then it was occasionally shuffling folder permissions around and not making them accessible.
So if we assume you’re one of those who are encountering that, you’ll need to shuffle your permissions around again and then make sure you’re not running as administrator. Once done shouldn’t be any problem. Again, only if your issue is related.
Ok I checked out both links and I have replicated most of the admin rights with no affect…
I did see a suggestion for renaming the “brave.exe” to “bb” and that worked! I can now launch Brave and it opens just fine. I see all my bookmarks and it has all my saved passwords…
Ok, so can I change back to “Brave.exe” and will it work as expected? Also once I updated the “exe” name the UAC was removed from the browser shortcut…
I can rename the “bb.exe” back to “Brave.exe” and I can launch Brave just fine, but only if I have an open browser. If I close all and then try to launch, issue returns and Brave will not launch.
I have also noticed that I’m unable to access “Shields” and “Rewards” both of those are “greyed” out…
Ok I just resolved this issue… I removed the check for- Run this program as an administrator. If I look at the same settings for the Brave Beta Properties I do not see that enabled.. Once I removed that “check” Brave is working as expected now.
Thank you for you suggestions, it really helped me isolate and resolve the issue…
