Application can't be opened iMac

For the last three days my email links cannot be opened with Brave my Default browser. I get a message “The Application can’t be opened.” -10673. If I right click and select open with google I can open the links. But it will not allow me to open with Brave. I have an older iMAC and when I checked it says my Brave is up to date. What can I do to stop this? I don’t want to use chrome.

Can you please tell me what macOS version and Brave version you are using when you see this issue?

You can find your macOS version by going to System Settings --> General --> About

You can find you Brave version by launching the browser and going to Menu --> Settings --> Help --> About Brave

iMAC Montery 12.7.6
Brave 1.80.122

To clarify, what application are you using to view your emails clicking/opening those links from?

Hi, this is what I get. I use BRAVE as my application I have an iMac so I use Mail for emails. This just started recently and is so frustrating. I want to use BRAVE but keep having to open links in google chrome.

Your wisdom sure would help. Thanks, Robin

Can you try opening your Mail app, then going to Mail --> Settings --> Default email reader and ensure this is set to the Mail app?

I did and it is set to Mail app

Hmmm not sure why this is happening. Going to do some digging on this – in the meantime, can you please try changing the default browser from Brave to another browser, then back to Brave again and see if this fixes the behavior?

How could it be my mail app if it allows google. app and safari to open them just not Brave?

Well testing on my end, I’m able to use the mail app and click on links, which open in Brave. So it is likely something to do with the settings/setup on your end. Additionally, when searching online, I’m seeing other users reporting this same error/behavior on macOS in other applications, so I don’t think the issue is Brave specific (it is just presenting as Brave in your case).

I did that. Changed to chrome and all my links in emails worked. I switched back to Brave and none of them worked.

Ugh.

I will ask around and see if anyone on our macOS team has any suggestions. In the meantime, here is a list of things you can check against on your end:

@rmc66 , @Mattches ,

Sometimes for an authorization problem on the Mac, it becomes necessary to delete the com.apple.TCC folder within the Mac User’s Home folder > Library folder:

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/com.apple.TCC

Do that, without any application running; and next, immediately after deleting that folder, log out. (After logging back in, you may also choose to Restart the Mac, before proceeding.)

A new com.apple.TCC folder will be created. The user will thereafter, occasionally be prompted to OK the running / use of various processes. (The user is sort of starting over, re certain authorizations.)

TCC stands for “Transparency, Consent, and Control”.

NOTE 1: The com.apple.TCC folder at the location mentioned above, is NOT malware.

NOTE 2: The folder to be removed, is NOT the same-named folder at: /Library/Application Support/com.apple.TCC ← Leave that folder alone!

INFO THERE: The part that I noticed, when searching for a solution to an authorization problem I encountered about 1.5 months ago:

“The fix in this case was to delete the com.apple.TCC folder in the user’s Library ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.TCC and immediately log out.”
