Aggregate Topic: Outdated Brave crashing on YouTube

Every time I tried a search on Google today (search IRS forms as example) Brave browser would crash as soon as I hit the enter key. When I disabled scripts in Brave settings there was no longer a problem. With scripts on it would just disappear and upon opening Brave again it would ask if you want to restore Brave since it didn’t shut down correctly. I am on Windows 7 64 bit. I haven’t checked to see if this is a problem yet on Windows 10 as I know Brave says it is not doing updates on for Windows 7 versions anymore. I do question since Brave browser is getting so popular that this is some attempt by Google to get people back on their Chrome browser.
Google searches done with Chrome or Firefox did not crash with Windows 7. I’ll be checking to see if the same problem happens on Windows 10.
I haven’t had any problems elsewhere with Brave so I know it sounds a bit like a conspiracy theory but really ? Brave only crashes on Google search with scripts on???

This is your issue. You should upgrade if you want to be protected and have things continue to work well.

Mainly been YouTube, but it’s a Google thing. If you haven’t noticed all the discussions about it over the past year or two, Google/YouTube has been trying to get rid of adblockers and are doing all they can to force ads through.

Nah, as mentioned, it’s to get people to drop adblockers and let people be tracked.

Honestly, this sounds more like an extension or something. Do you have any extensions running on that version?

I do want to circle back to this. Windows 7 isn’t supported. Brave isn’t going to make modifications to older versions and you wouldn’t be able to get any fixes as you’re unable to update. People coming on to ask for help for versions of Brave or OS that has sunsetted and no longer supported somehow seem to miss out on the idea that they aren’t supported anymore. That means no customer support or solution. The only real answer typically is to update or switch to something else, though there honestly isn’t really anything else to switch to for outdated OS.

Thank you. You are actually helpful. Problem solved. Kudos.

As it happened I already had uBlock Origin installed and stacked on top of Brave’s built-in blockers. Disabling “Trackers & ads blocking” did the trick.

If anybody still doesn’t realize what an absolutely repulsive company GoogleYouTube is, this may nudge them closer to the reality.

This worked for me too. I had same exact problem as OP. Same OS too.
Thanks

B700 - Agree - This is about how Google/Youtube is trying to control everything including elections and what people think.

Saoiray, I’ve got Windows 10 and 11 on this same computer (10 hard drives) and can readily use any of them but I’ve got hundreds of programs on Windows 7 and prefer it over the newer and more locked down versions of windows (for people who don’t know how to do their own security). Windows 7 is still a great OS widely in use and I’m not going to move to newer versions so it would be nice if Brave could still support Win 7 versions. However I can take care of this particular problem as others have mentioned above by disabling trackers and ad blocking and then installing something like uBlock origin.

Problem is chromium ditched it and Brave is relying on chromium overall. It would be a lot of time and money to try to code yet another different version of Brave for people on older OS. And the number of people refusing to upgrade to Windows 7 just isn’t big enough to cater to and recoup the cost of the time and money.

And you know it’s not that simple or any of the so-called tech geniuses (not referencing/bashing you) who think they know how to handle coding and security would have already built something out together. But that isn’t happening.

Which works for now. But with Manifest V3 eventually going to hit and things be controlled, this might not even be an option for you later on. It’s just a way to temporarily delay things.

I have win10, and I have the same issue.

And what version of Brave?

You can try
Settings → Shields → Trackers & ads blocking: Disabled
Then, you need to disable the Shields on youtube.com and google.com on first visits. Once that’s done, you can reenable it. Then use uBlock Origin or your preferred adblocker in its place.
Note that this could possibly be happening on ANY page embedded with youtube.

Barring that:
I recommend backing up what you can on the browser. Then make a back-up of
C:\Users\ [user]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data
Once that’s done, update your browser. Unfortunately there isn’t much else that can be done at the moment.

Keep an eye on these threads for possible news updates:

Version 1.46.134

This seems to work. I haven’t had any crashes so far.

I also realized that an error occurs while Brave checking for updates:
Update check failed to start (error code 3: 0x80040154 --system level)

This is/was your issue. Current version of Brave is 1.64 and newer. You’re using outdated version of Brave that is no longer supported. And if you are on Windows 10, there’s no real rhyme or reason for not updating to latest versions

This AM I tried ti access a movie review, I was ashed to signin which I could not do of course. Since then
(a) Brave continually crashes
(b) The sign in request appears elsewhere eg Google (screenshot attached - errr refuses to attach despite it being tiny (14K). Goe can I get rid of it???

Version 1.47.186 Chromium: 109.0.5414.119 (Official Build) (64-bit)
running on Win7

@Luser it’s helpful if you Search Before Posting as there are already a lot of discussions on this happening. There are two things to keep in mind here.

  1. You’re using an older, unsupported version of Brave. That means you can’t get assistance on any issues that come. There will be no more patches or updates. Ideally you should be updating your OS and browser.

  2. The workaround found by people is that disabling Shields will resolve the crashing. This is especially true for YouTube and Google owned sites.

Ok, many have reported Brave browser crashes when attempting to load the youtube home page or open a youtube link. The overwhelming number of reports are by people using the desktop version, and thus most issues, possible solutions, concern those.

I’m using Brave browser on an Android device, no computer usage. So I wanted to make that clear in the topic heading, and hope we can find some fix for those using Brave browser on Android. This issue started last night, I don’t know what triggered it, whether it was hitting a link, or a page not opening, I don’t know.

In fact, the entire browser failed, Brave was in continual crash mode, 1 or 2 seconds after opening any window. Alright, I was able to get an incognito window open and stay open, and from there do the clear cache, cookies, history, etc.
Nope, that didn’t do anything. Updated Brave a few versions ahead of what I was using, and no, that didn’t solve it.

Using other browsers and searching through reddit subs (as this community was down), I was able to work in Brave settings. (After numerous ‘quick tries’ to get an incognito window open and remain open, whew!) And messed around with tab appearance, video playback settings and such, and somehow got Brave back in action! Great, I thought.

But no, today I discovered the issue with the ‘auto-crash’ when youtube’s home page is opened, or a youtube link is hit.

Some people reported if you disable the ad blocking, youtube doesn’t crash. That worked. So there is one temporary fix, but that can’t be long-term solution.

So for now, I’ll use other browsers for youtube, and perhaps other video links, we’ll see if they are disrupted as well.

Brave Version: 1.51 something
Oneplus N10, Android 11

So the issue is everytime I open a link to any you tube page Brave crashes.

Any fix please? @scavxo

Thanks in advance.

The Problem occurs while Loading Google and Youtube

If Browser keeps crashing and not allowing you to Recover any data or control the crash from Stopping, Going offline will fix the issue… I have No antivirus or any kind of Protection due to I know how to protect by myself but Yesterday’s issue made me felt like Myself and Brave Shields has Failed and a Virus took over But it seems Like Shields is the Reason for crash.

Just Few days ago, I have Complained to Shields Team about this issue

https://community.brave.app/t/spotify-keeps-crashing-in-brave/532078/60

It feels like Brave team has Lost Motivation to keep supporting Win 8.1… A kind of Mindset → Why Continue to add Support While No one else is doing it ? This is not tech issue But Mindset issue with it ->>> Brave team could fix this issue if they wanted to But Lack of Strong Mindset and Motivation is Stopping them to Look after this issue and Simply Give their Excuse of Unsupported OS.

A Custom Shields Backend update for v1.47.186 could fix this issue But that will Only happen while Brave team Realizes Chromium Updates and Shields updates are two different things and if Shields were working for 1+ year without Brave’s Chromium update for Win 8.1/7, They can make it work forever… A New update v1.47.187 Which provides Major Shields updates for Win 8.1/7 and Port a New Server dedicated for Win 8.1/7 updates of brave ad block components could fix it, But as i said Mindset and Motivation is Required to Work on it…

If your CPU is Powerful, I will Post a VM guide today… Virtualbox will be the solution, The VM was only my Backup plan But i did not Expect that will become a Necessity so Fast…

Brave worked perfectly, but then suddenly out of nowhere, It started to crash on Youtube and some other web sites. I Have Win 7, I can’t afford nor do I want to upgrade windows. I was quite happy as things were. So what happened? Did you fix something that broke it? Fox and others still work fine, I dont like them. Will brave undo this break or fix it? Or do I have to move back to fox?

Please let me know…

  1. Yes @ArunROG87Razer turning off the shield ad blocker for You Tube worked immediately.

  2. But since it worked fine aprox 1 hour before the above described issue. does that mean YT has changed something in my registry?

  3. Or have they upgraded their server to prompt the crash?

  4. Yes the virtual box looks good. Will these specs suit?
