Description of the issue: 1440p live streams on YouTube are only watchable in 1080p unless user switches to Desktop Mode. This is quite recent bug because this has not been around that long.
How can this issue be reproduced?
-
Search for CohhCarnage
-
Check if he’s live streaming
-
Check the stream quality, it only goes upto 1080p, all qualities above that are missing
-
The same exact stream plays in 1440p just fine in YouTube app
Expected result: Video qualities above 1080p should be selectable
Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave - Nightly 1.97.23, Chromium 153.0.8010.37
Mobile Device details: Android 16 - OneUI 8.5
Additional Information:
This is still an issue on Brave - Nightly 1.98.37, Chromium 155.0.8059.16.
Any idea? @Mattches
I think this is an expected behavior of the youtube mobile website – I see this same behavior in every browser I’ve tested.
It wasn’t like this before though, few versions ago 1440p worked in live streams in mobile view just fine.
Keep in mind that on iOS 1080p has always been the max, but my issue is on Android, where 1440p live streams used to work correctly, but now only appear in Desktop Mode.
That may be the case, but I suspect that maybe youtube (Google) may have changed something here. Likely a push to try and get more people using the app rather than the mobile site.
Can you try downloading Firefox and another Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Opera, Edge, etc.) and see if you get the same results there?
I tried Firefox, same issue. I think this is Google’s doing.
I suspected as much. As I mentioned before, I’m sure it’s part of a push to get more people to use the native Youtube app rather than the mobile website.
